Three Nine Wine is a blog about enjoying good wine on a regular basis while keeping our average cost per bottle under 10 dollars.
Or…9.99 to be more precise.
Now this doesn’t mean that every bottle of wine you buy has to be priced below $9.99. What it does mean though is that if you enjoy a $30 bottle of wine, then you’ll need to find four good $5 bottles to get your average back down to $9.99.
A quick illustration:
Bottle 1 – $30
Bottle 2 – $5
Bottle 3 – $5
Bottle 4 – $5
Bottle 5 – $4.95
————-
Total cost: $49.95
divided by 5 bottles
——————-
Average bottle price = $9.99
You get the idea. We like wine, but we’re on a budget.
What’s nice about this “system” is that it allows you to splurge on a mid-range to expensive bottle of wine once in a while and still keep your books balanced as long as you have some favorite low priced wines you can to turn to to get you back on track. That’s why you’ll find our focus here will be mainly on sharing our experience exploring the world of moderately priced wines, but we’ll also venture occasionally into higher priced wines as well.
Now, about the name…
Well, that $9.99 target price point is obviously part of it. But there’s another part of the name that comes from the technology industry where the term three nines is used to describe a level of reliability (SLA) equaling or better than 99.9%. For example, a web hosting company may offer a three nines performance guarantee, meaning that they promise their servers will be up and operating 99.9% of the time.
Ironically, five nines has now surpassed three nines as a benchmark SLA, but that would kind of blow the whole price point aspect, so we’re sticking with three nines.
To help keep keep track of things here, we’re sharing our spreadsheet on value wines which includes information on (among other things) the wines we’re buying, where we’re buying them from and how much we’re paying.
Three Nine Wine is based in San Antonio, Texas, so though the stores we’ll be shopping at and talking about here are mostly local to our area, many of the wines we’ll be trying should be available at wine stores across the country and around the world.
Thanks for visiting Three Nine Wine.
